Wix, Squarespace, and Traditional Agencies vs. a Managed Care Site

Compare Wix/Squarespace, a traditional London Ontario agency build ($1,500–$8,000+), and Web Maintained Care at $129–$449 CAD/month with the custom build included — for Canadian trades and small businesses.

    Updated September 10, 2026

Most Ontario searches for “building a website” land on three options: a DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy), a traditional agency or freelancer who quotes a project, or a managed Care plan where the custom build is included in a flat monthly CAD fee. They are not the same product. This guide is for owner-operators — plumbers, HVAC, landscapers, shops — who need customers to find them and call, not another dashboard.

Builders are good tools when you will actually use them. Agencies are excellent when you have cash for a $2,000–$8,000 build and want a discovery-call process. A managed Care site is the third path: someone else designs, hosts, updates, and keeps it findable for one invoice. Dollars over 3 and 12 months sit in website cost in Canada.

What a website builder actually sells

Wix, Squarespace, and similar platforms sell you a dashboard. In Canada a usable plan — custom domain, no “made with…” badge, forms that email you — is usually about $20–$60 CAD per month. You pick a template, drag blocks, publish. Hosting is included. Design help, Google work, and “the contact form died” are not.

GoDaddy’s builder is the same shape at a different checkout: cheap to start, easy to stall, and easy to confuse with the domain you already bought from them. The site is still yours to finish and keep alive.

    • You own the evenings: copy, photos, mobile layout, and the next template refresh
    • SEO is a settings panel, not someone watching Search Console
    • Apps (booking, pop-ups, extra storage) add line items the advertised price hid
    • Leaving later means exporting what the platform will let you take

What an AI website builder actually sells

ChatGPT, Claude, and newer “AI website builder” products can draft a homepage in a minute. That is useful. It is not a live business site. Someone still has to host it, point a .ca at it, make it load on a phone, write service pages Google and Google AI Mode can quote, connect email, and fix it when a form breaks in March.

Used well, AI is a first draft: structure, a tone pass, alt text. Used as the product, it is a folder of HTML you now have to maintain — the same unpaid job as a Wix site, with worse defaults for speed and search unless you already know what you are doing.

What a traditional agency or freelancer sells

A London or Southwestern Ontario studio typically sells a project: discovery calls, a custom (or heavily customized) build, then launch. Public list prices and local cost guides in 2026 commonly put a small-business brochure site in the $1,500–$8,000 CAD band before anything goes live. After launch you often still pay hosting, and many shops sell separate maintenance or SEO retainers.

Examples of public package ranges (not quotes from us — check each vendor for current CAD/HST, dated around September 2026): SmartWebPros lists site packages from about $650 to $3,150+ and SEO from about $450–$850/month; Canada Web Pro lists managed WordPress builds from about $2,900–$6,000+; RenEH Designs lists packages around $2,000 / $5,000 / $8,000 with payment plans; Blake Strategies discusses builds roughly $1,500–$15,000 and care from about $79/month. Full-service agencies such as ZOO, TMD, Interweave, and Vasp often keep pricing off the page.

    • Strong fit when you want brand depth, paid ads under one roof, or a large multi-page project
    • Upfront cash (or a financed project fee) before month-one care
    • SEO foundations or “AI optimization” may be sold as add-on retainers, not included in Care-level pricing
    • Sales process is usually call-first — fine if you have calendar time; friction if you work evenings in a truck

What a managed Care site actually sells

A fully managed website is not a template you finish. At Web Maintained we design and build it as part of the plan, then keep it hosted, backed up, and findable for a flat monthly CAD fee. You email changes. You do not get a CMS login. Care is $129, Care Plus $249, Care Pro $449, three-month starter term, then month-to-month. The custom build is included — there is no separate build invoice, and we do not call it a free website.

The trade: your domain, content, photos, and copy are yours. The codebase stays with us — that is how the build stays included. If you need to install arbitrary plugins or take the source to another host, a builder or WordPress is the honest fit. We wrote that split in low-maintenance vs. WordPress.

For trades in London, Ontario and Southwestern Ontario, that usually means a mobile-first brochure site with services, service area, and click-to-call — the kind of site people can use after hours. Live examples sit on our Work page. Google reviews on our Business Profile (including Megan Hobbs of Paws & Doors) are the social proof we publish; we will not invent rankings or review counts.

The year-one math most people skip

A $29/month builder is $348 a year before apps. Add 40 hours of your time at even a modest wage and it is no longer the cheap option. A traditional $4,000 build plus $150/month care is $5,800 in year one before SEO add-ons. A $129 Care plan is $1,548 over 12 months with no build invoice and no dashboard. An unfinished Wix plus a freelancer later is usually the most expensive path, because you paid twice.

If the site is not how you get work yet, pay the platform fee and learn. If it is how you get work, the monthly number that matters is whether someone is still maintaining it in month eleven. That is the maintenance checklist in one sentence.

When to stay on a builder

    • You enjoy the software and will actually publish updates.
    • The site is a holding page, a hobby, or a side project.
    • You need a feature the builder does well (some booking stacks, a simple shop you will operate yourself).
    • You want to take the project with you as a platform account, not as content plus a domain.

When a traditional agency is the better buy

    • You need brand, video, paid ads, and web under one retainer and have the budget for it.
    • The project is a large multi-site or complex app — not a brochure / lead-generation site.
    • You want to own a WordPress (or similar) codebase you will hand to an in-house marketer.

    When to choose managed Care

    • The Wix or Squarespace tab has been open for months and the site is still “almost done.”
    • An agency quoted thousands before a homepage, and you would rather see a preview first.
    • You are paying a platform and still Googling how to change the hours.
    • Customers find you on Facebook because the site cannot be found on Google.
    • You want one CAD invoice and email, not another login or mandatory discovery call.

We rebuild rather than “take over” a builder account. You keep the domain; we point it at the new site when you are ready. Photos and copy you already have can be reused. Start with the questionnaire if that is the situation — about ten minutes, reply within two business days.

    Questions that come up

Is Wix cheaper than a managed site in Canada?
The Wix subscription usually is. The year often is not, once you count your time, extra apps, and the freelancer you hire when something breaks. Care at $129 CAD/month includes the build, hosting, backups, SEO foundations, and edit hours. Compare 6- and 12-month totals on the website cost in Canada guide.
Why do London Ontario agencies often charge $3,000–$8,000 before launch?
A traditional project pays for discovery, design, build, and launch as a lump (or financed project). That is a real service. Web Maintained includes the custom build in monthly Care after you approve a homepage preview — month one is $129 CAD, not a $0 invoice and not a free website. Public local package ranges vary; always confirm with the vendor.
Do I need a website if I already have a Google Business Profile?
GBP helps you show on Maps. A clear site still carries services, proof, and a place to send people who search your name or a service page after hours. Many trades use both. We will not promise Maps rankings.
What’s better for a plumber or HVAC company: Wix or a managed site?
Wix is fine if you will maintain it. Most owner-operators will not. A managed Care site is built for click-to-call, local service pages, and email-first updates so the site keeps working when you are on a job.
Can Claude or ChatGPT replace a web studio?
They can draft pages. They do not host your .ca, keep forms working, or watch Google for you. Treat them as a first draft. Someone still has to ship and maintain the live site — you, or a studio.
Can you maintain my existing Wix or Squarespace site?
No. We rebuild on our stack so the included build and flat CAD care are possible. You keep your domain and we can reuse your content. We will not log into a builder dashboard as an ongoing service.
What’s included in a website care plan with Web Maintained?
Custom design and build as part of the plan, hosting, SSL, backups, SEO foundations, and monthly edit hours by plan (Care $129, Plus $249, Pro $449 CAD). Three-month starter, then month-to-month. E-commerce is scoped separately.
